Remote Engine Start

Basic information

Nissan Murano Intelligent Key showing the Remote Engine Start controls

The Remote Engine Start button symbol on the NISSAN Intelligent Key button is included on the NISSAN Intelligent Key when the vehicle is equipped with Remote Engine Start. This feature allows the engine of the Nissan Murano to be started from outside the vehicle while the doors remain locked.

On vehicles equipped with automatic climate control, the system may automatically select a heating or cooling mode according to the temperatures outside the vehicle and inside the passenger compartment. Climate control operation may therefore differ depending on current conditions.

Laws in certain communities may restrict or prohibit the use of Remote Engine Start or limit how long the engine of a parked vehicle may idle. Some regulations may require the person operating Remote Engine Start to keep the vehicle in view, while others may permit longer idling only under specific conditions, such as freezing temperatures.

Review and follow all local laws and regulations before using Remote Engine Start. The driver remains responsible for operating the feature legally and safely.

Environmental and vehicle-related conditions may affect whether Remote Engine Start operates as expected. Signal interference, surrounding structures, the position of the vehicle, and other operating conditions may also influence the performance and effective range of the Intelligent Key transmitter.

Remote Engine Start operating range

WARNING

  • To reduce the risk of serious injury or death caused by unintended operation of the vehicle or its systems, including accidental door locking or entrapment in the windows, never leave children, people who require assistance, or pets unattended inside the vehicle. The interior of a closed vehicle can become dangerously hot within a short time on a warm day, creating a significant risk of heat-related injury or death.
  • Never use Remote Engine Start inside a garage or any other enclosed or poorly ventilated area. Vehicle exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that is extremely dangerous. Breathing carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness, serious injury, or death.

CAUTION If the Intelligent Key battery is discharged or strong radio-frequency sources are present near the operating location, the effective range of the Intelligent Key may be reduced. Under these conditions, the transmitter may respond inconsistently or fail to operate the Remote Engine Start feature.

Remote Engine Start can be used only when the Intelligent Key is within the specified operating range of the Nissan Murano and the transmitted command can be received by the vehicle.

The approximate Remote Engine Start operating range is 197 ft (60 m) from the vehicle. The actual usable distance may be shorter depending on nearby obstacles, radio interference, and surrounding conditions.

Remote starting the vehicle

To start the engine using the Remote Engine Start feature, complete the following procedure in the stated order:

1. Aim the Intelligent Key toward the vehicle and remain within the effective operating range.

2. Press the Intelligent Key lock button used before Remote Engine Startbutton to lock all doors.

3. Within 5 seconds, press and hold the Remote Engine Start button held to start the Nissan Murano engine button until the turn signal lights flash and the tail lamps illuminate. If the vehicle is not clearly visible from your location, press and hold the Remote Engine Start button held for at least two seconds button for at least 2 seconds.

When the engine starts successfully, the following events will occur:

  • The parking lights will illuminate and remain on while the remotely started engine is running.
  • The doors will remain locked, and the climate control system may begin operating according to vehicle and temperature conditions.
  • The engine will continue running for up to 20 minutes unless Remote Engine Start is canceled earlier or another cancellation condition occurs.

Before driving, press and hold the brake pedal, and then press the push-button ignition switch to place it in the ON position. Only one Remote Engine Start operation is permitted between ignition cycles.

Before the remote-start procedure can be used again, the Nissan Murano must be driven at a speed of at least 4 mph (7 km/h). This driving requirement resets the availability of the Remote Engine Start function for the next permitted cycle.

Canceling a Remote Engine Start

To stop an active Remote Engine Start operation, perform any one of the following actions or allow one of the listed vehicle conditions to occur:

  • Aim the Intelligent Key toward the vehicle and press Remote Engine Start button used to cancel remote engine operation until the parking lights turn off.
  • Turn on the hazard indicator flashers.
  • Place the ignition switch in the ON position and then return it to the OFF position.
  • Allow the 20-minute remote-start operating period to expire.
  • Open the engine hood.
  • Shift the vehicle out of the P (Park) position.
  • Allow the vehicle alarm to activate because unauthorized entry has been detected.
  • Press the ignition switch when no Intelligent Key is detected inside the vehicle.
  • Press the ignition switch while an Intelligent Key is detected inside the vehicle but the brake pedal is not depressed.

Conditions the Remote Engine Start will not work

Remote Engine Start will not operate when any of the following conditions are present. Correct the applicable condition before attempting the procedure again:

  • The ignition switch is already in the ON position.
  • The engine hood is open or is not securely latched.
  • The hazard indicator lights are turned on.
  • The engine is already running or has not stopped completely. If the engine has just been switched off, wait at least 6 seconds before attempting Remote Engine Start.
  • The Remote Engine Start button that must be held for at least two seconds button is not pressed and held for at least 2 seconds.
  • The Remote Engine Start button that must be pressed within five seconds of locking button is not pressed and held within 5 seconds after the lock button is pressed.
  • The brake pedal is depressed.
  • One or more doors are open, not fully closed, or not locked.
  • The rear liftgate is open or not securely closed.
  • The "Key System Fault See Owner's Manual" warning remains continuously displayed in the vehicle information display.
  • The alarm is sounding because unauthorized entry into the vehicle has been detected.
  • One Remote Engine Start operation has already been used during the current ignition cycle. Before using the function again, the vehicle must be driven at a speed of at least 4 mph (7 km/h).
  • The transmission is not in the P (Park) position.
  • A registered Intelligent Key is detected inside the vehicle.

When Remote Engine Start cannot operate or requires attention, a related warning message or indicator may appear in the vehicle information display. Review the displayed information and correct the identified condition before trying to start the engine remotely again.
