Basic Information

Steering Assist is an integral part of the ProPILOT Assist Systems. Before using this feature in the Nissan Murano, read the entire ProPILOT Assist section, including the instructions for operating the system and interpreting its displays and indicators. For additional details, see "ProPILOT Assist Systems", "How to operate ProPILOT Assist" and "ProPILOT Assist displays and indicators".

Steering Assist uses a forward-facing camera to monitor clearly visible and consistent lane markings on both sides of the vehicle. When operating conditions are satisfied, the feature provides steering assistance intended to help keep the Nissan Murano near the center of the current travel lane. Steering Assist is available only while operating together with the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system as part of ProPILOT Assist.

Steering Assist can become active when all of the following operating conditions are met:

• ProPILOT Assist is activated.
• Lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are clearly and consistently detected.
• The vehicle is traveling at a speed above 37 mph (60 km/h), or a vehicle ahead is detected while traveling below 37 mph (60 km/h).
• The driver keeps both hands appropriately positioned on the steering wheel and remains ready to steer.
• The vehicle is being driven near the center of the current lane.
• The turn signals are not operating.
• The windshield wipers are not operating in the high-speed position.

If a sharp curve or strong crosswind exceeds the steering capability of the system and the vehicle begins approaching a lane marking, the Intelligent Lane Intervention (I-LI) system may activate.

The I-LI system provides visual and audible warnings together with steering-wheel vibration and may apply steering assistance to help the driver guide the vehicle back toward the center of the lane. The driver must continue steering and remain in control throughout the intervention. For more information, see "Lane Departure Warning (LDW)/Intelligent Lane Intervention (I-LI)".

How to enable/disable Steering Assist:

Use the following procedure to enable or disable Steering Assist through the vehicle information display:

• Press the button on the steering wheel repeatedly until "Settings" appears in the vehicle information display.
• Use the scroll dial to highlight "Driver Assistance". Then press the OK button to open the Driver Assistance menu.
• Use the scroll dial to select "Lane Centering Assist". Then press the OK button to access the available lane-centering settings.
• Use the scroll dial to select "Steering Assist", and then press the OK button to switch the feature on or off.

NOTE: The selected Steering Assist setting remains stored after the engine is turned off and restarted.

NOTE: Before every drive, make sure the radar sensors, cameras, and sonar sensors are clean and unobstructed. Dirt, ice, damage, or other contamination on the cameras or sensors can reduce system performance. Weather, lighting, and other environmental conditions may also affect the ability of the system to detect lane markings and surrounding objects accurately.

Steering Assist temporary standby

Automatic standby due to driving operation (for ProPILOT Assist and ProPILOT Assist 1.1): When the driver operates a turn signal, Steering Assist enters temporary standby. The feature resumes automatically after the turn signal is canceled and all required operating conditions are satisfied again. Automatic standby: In any of the following situations, two chimes sound and Steering Assist enters temporary standby. The system resumes automatically when the condition has cleared and the necessary operating requirements are met again.

• When the current travel lane is too narrow for the system to provide reliable steering assistance.
• When a curve is too sharp for the system to keep the vehicle within the current travel lane.
• When lane markings on both sides of the vehicle can no longer be detected clearly.
• When the vehicle ahead is no longer detected while the Nissan Murano is traveling below approximately 37 mph (60 km/h).
• When intense light enters the forward-facing camera, such as direct sunlight shining toward the front of the vehicle at sunrise or sunset.
• When the temperature of the camera unit becomes too high for reliable operation.

Steering Assist cancel

Under the following conditions, Steering Assist cancels completely. Two warning chimes sound, a warning message appears in the vehicle information display, and both the Steering Assist status indicator and Steering Assist indicator turn off:

• When unusual, conflicting, or unclear lane markings appear in the travel lane, or when the lane markings cannot be detected correctly for an extended period. This may occur because of snow ruts, reflected light on a wet road, several overlapping lane markings, or other visual conditions that make the lane boundaries difficult to identify.
• When the windshield wipers operate at high speed. Steering Assist is disabled if high-speed wiper operation continues for more than approximately 10 seconds.

Action to take: After the condition that caused the cancellation is no longer present, switch Steering Assist on again using the Steering Assist switch. Confirm that the lane markings are visible and that all required operating conditions have been restored before relying on steering assistance.

Steering Assist malfunction

If Steering Assist detects a malfunction, the system turns off automatically. The yellow Steering Assist status warning illuminates, and the message "Malfunction See Owner's Manual" appears in the vehicle information display. Depending on the circumstances, a warning chime may also sound.

Action to take: Move the vehicle to a safe location, press the park button to shift into the P (Park) position, and turn off the engine. Restart the engine, resume driving when it is safe to do so, and attempt to set the ICC system again.

If the yellow warning continues to illuminate after the engine has been restarted, Steering Assist may be malfunctioning and should not be considered available.

The Nissan Murano can still be driven using normal manual control, but the Steering Assist system should be inspected. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
