Hill start assist system

WARNING

  • Never rely exclusively on the hill start assist system to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward on an incline. Always remain attentive and ready to control the Nissan Murano with the brake pedal.

Keep the brake pedal firmly depressed whenever the vehicle is stopped on a steep hill. Use particular caution on frozen, snow-covered, wet, or muddy surfaces, where available traction may be limited. Failure to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward could lead to loss of control, a collision, serious injury, or death.

  • The hill start assist system is not designed to hold the vehicle stationary on a hill for an extended period. Continue pressing the brake pedal while stopped on a steep incline. Releasing the pedal without being prepared to accelerate may allow the vehicle to roll backward and could result in a collision or serious personal injury.
  • Hill start assist may not prevent backward movement under every vehicle load, road-surface, or incline condition.

Always be prepared to apply the brake pedal immediately if the Nissan Murano begins to move backward. Failure to maintain control of the vehicle may result in a collision or serious personal injury.

When the vehicle is stopped on an incline, the hill start assist system temporarily maintains brake pressure after the driver releases the brake pedal. This brief assistance helps reduce backward movement during the transition from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

Hill start assist operates automatically when all of the following conditions are met:

  • The shift position is placed in a forward or reverse gear.
  • The vehicle has been brought to a complete stop on an incline by applying the brake pedal.
  • The gradient of the hill is greater than 5%.

The system can hold brake pressure for a maximum of two seconds. The driver should move promptly from the brake pedal to the accelerator and begin driving before this holding period expires.

After approximately two seconds, hill start assist releases the brakes completely and the vehicle may begin to roll backward if the driver has not applied the accelerator or brake pedal.

Hill start assist does not operate when the shift position is in N (Neutral) or P (Park). It also does not activate when the Nissan Murano is stopped on a flat or level road.
