Most common factors contributing to vehicle corrosion
Vehicle corrosion most commonly develops when moisture, dirt, road residue, and damage to protective exterior finishes are allowed to remain untreated. The main contributing factors include:
- The buildup of moisture-retaining dirt, sand, salt, and debris inside body panel sections, enclosed cavities, seams, and other areas where contaminants may remain trapped.
- Damage to paint and other protective coatings caused by gravel, stone chips, scratches, or minor collisions, which can expose the underlying metal to moisture and corrosive substances.
Environmental factors influence the rate of corrosion
Moisture
The accumulation of sand, dirt, salt, and water on the underside of the Nissan Murano can accelerate corrosion by holding moisture against metal surfaces. Wet carpets or floor coverings may not dry completely while they remain inside the passenger compartment. Remove them and allow them to dry thoroughly to help prevent moisture from contributing to corrosion of the floor panels.
Relative humidity
Corrosion develops more rapidly in areas with high relative humidity, particularly where temperatures frequently remain above freezing. The risk is further increased in regions affected by atmospheric pollution or regular use of road salt.
Temperature
High temperatures can accelerate corrosion on components and surfaces that are poorly ventilated. Heat combined with trapped moisture and contaminants may increase the rate at which unprotected materials deteriorate.
Air pollution
Industrial pollution, salt carried in coastal air, and extensive road salt use can significantly accelerate the corrosion process. These contaminants may collect on painted panels, the underbody, and exposed components if they are not removed through regular cleaning.
Road salt can also contribute to the gradual breakdown and deterioration of painted surfaces, especially where the finish has already been chipped, scratched, or otherwise damaged.
Protect your vehicle from corrosion
- Wash and wax the Nissan Murano regularly to remove dirt, salt, and environmental residue while maintaining a protective layer over the painted surfaces.
- Inspect the exterior frequently for small chips, scratches, or other paint damage, and have affected areas repaired as soon as possible before corrosion begins to develop.
- Keep the drain holes along the lower edges of the doors open and free from dirt so accumulated water can drain properly.
- Inspect the underbody regularly for deposits of sand, mud, dirt, or road salt. If any buildup is found, rinse it away with clean water as soon as reasonably possible.
CAUTION
- NEVER attempt to remove sand, dirt, or other debris from the passenger compartment by washing the interior with a hose. Use a vacuum cleaner or broom to remove loose material safely.
- Do not allow water or other liquids to contact electronic components inside the vehicle. Moisture may damage electrical equipment or interfere with proper component operation.
Chemicals used to de-ice road surfaces are highly corrosive. If left on the vehicle, they may accelerate rust and deterioration of underbody components, including the exhaust system, fuel and brake lines, brake cables, floor pan, and fenders.
During winter, clean the underbody of the Nissan Murano periodically to remove road salt, de-icing chemicals, mud, and other corrosive deposits.
In regions where additional protection against rust and corrosion may be necessary, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for information about suitable protective treatment.
