Variable voltage control system

CAUTION

• Do not connect the ground wire of an electrical accessory directly to the battery terminal. A direct battery connection can bypass the variable voltage control system and may prevent the vehicle battery from receiving a complete charge.
• Whenever practical, operate electrical accessories while the engine is running. Extended accessory use with the engine stopped may discharge the battery and leave insufficient power for starting.

NOTE: If the battery is completely discharged, the transmission cannot be shifted manually to another position.

The Nissan Murano is equipped with a variable voltage control system that monitors the amount of electrical current being discharged from the battery. Based on this information, the system regulates the voltage produced by the generator to support battery charging and the vehicle's electrical requirements.

Current sensor A is installed near the battery on the negative battery cable. This sensor must remain connected and unobstructed so the system can measure battery current correctly.

When installing additional electrical accessories, connect their ground wires to a suitable body grounding point, such as an appropriate location on the frame or engine block. Do not bypass the current sensor by grounding accessories directly to the negative battery terminal.

Drive belt

1. Drive belt automatic tensioner pulley

4. Air conditioner compressor pulley

WARNING Make sure the ignition switch is in the OFF or LOCK position before inspecting or servicing the drive belt. The engine or related components could begin moving unexpectedly and cause serious injury.

1. Inspect the drive belt visually for abnormal wear, cuts, cracks, frayed edges, or other visible deterioration. If the belt is damaged or in poor condition, it should be replaced. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.

2. Have the drive belt checked regularly to confirm that it remains in suitable operating condition. Regular inspection can identify developing wear before the belt becomes severely damaged.

Spark plugs

Replacing spark plugs

Iridium-tipped spark plugs

Iridium-tipped spark plugs A generally do not require replacement as often as conventional spark plugs because they are designed for a longer service life. Replace them according to the maintenance schedule listed in the "Maintenance and schedules" section of this manual. Do not attempt to extend their service life by cleaning or adjusting the electrode gap.

• Always install spark plugs of the recommended type or equivalent replacements that meet the specified requirements.

WARNING Before beginning spark plug service, make sure the engine is switched off, the ignition switch is in the OFF position, and the parking brake is applied securely.

CAUTION Use the correct spark plug socket when removing or installing the plugs. An unsuitable socket may crack, deform, or otherwise damage the spark plugs.

If spark plug replacement is required, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer to have the work performed correctly.

Air cleaner

Basic information

The dry paper-type air cleaner element may be cleaned and reused when its condition permits. Replace the filter according to the maintenance schedule shown in the "Maintenance and schedules" section of this manual.

To remove the engine air cleaner filter, complete the following procedure:

1. Release retaining clips A that secure the air cleaner cover to the housing.

2. Lift the air cleaner cover upward carefully to gain access to the filter element.

3. Remove the air cleaner filter from the housing. Wipe the interior of the filter housing and the underside of the cover with a clean, damp cloth, taking care not to leave dirt inside. Reinstall the cleaned filter or fit the replacement air cleaner element in the correct position.

NOTE: After installing a new air cleaner filter, make sure the cover is seated correctly in the housing and secure all retaining clips firmly.

WARNING

• Do not operate or drive the Nissan Murano with the air cleaner removed. In addition to filtering incoming air, the air cleaner helps contain flame if the engine backfires. Without the filter assembly in place, a backfire may expose anyone near the engine compartment to burns. Use caution whenever working around the engine while the air cleaner is removed.
• Never pour fuel into the throttle body or attempt to start the engine while the air cleaner is removed. Doing so may cause a fire, backfire, or other hazardous condition resulting in serious personal injury.

In-cabin microfilter

The vehicle may be equipped with an in-cabin microfilter that captures dirt, pollen, dust, and other airborne particles before they enter the passenger compartment. The filter may also reduce certain unpleasant odors from outside the vehicle.

The in-cabin microfilter is located within the instrument panel. Replace it at the maintenance intervals specified in the "Maintenance and schedules" section of this manual to help preserve heating and air-conditioning airflow.

If the filter requires replacement, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.

Replace the in-cabin microfilter if airflow from the ventilation system decreases noticeably or if the windows begin to fog easily while the heater or air conditioner is operating.
