Basic information

The following descriptions explain the scheduled maintenance items that should be inspected, serviced, or replaced at regular intervals. The maintenance schedule identifies the mileage and time intervals at which each item requires attention, helping the owner understand what work is needed to maintain the Nissan Murano in dependable operating condition.

In addition to the services listed in the scheduled maintenance table, certain components should be observed or checked during normal day-to-day vehicle use. Routine attention can reveal wear, leakage, damage, or changes in operation before they develop into more serious concerns.

Items identified with an “*” are recommended by NISSAN to support reliable vehicle operation, consistent performance, and the long-term condition of the applicable systems.

Maintenance of the items marked with an “*” is not required solely to preserve the warranties provided with your NISSAN. Other maintenance items and service intervals identified in the schedule remain required and should be completed as specified.

When applicable, further inspection, replacement, and service information can be found in the “Do-it-yourself” section of this manual. Review the related instructions and precautions before performing any work on the Nissan Murano.

NOTE: NISSAN does not recommend the use of aftermarket flushing systems that have not received OEM approval and strongly advises against performing these services on a NISSAN vehicle. Many aftermarket flushing systems use chemicals or solvents that are not approved by the original equipment manufacturer, and their compatibility and effects have not been validated by NISSAN.

Emission control system maintenance

Air cleaner filter: Replace the air cleaner filter at the specified intervals. A clean filter allows the engine to receive the airflow required for normal operation while helping prevent dust and debris from entering the intake system.

When the vehicle is operated for extended periods in dusty, sandy, or similarly contaminated conditions, inspect the filter more frequently and replace it sooner when necessary.

Engine coolant*: Replace the engine coolant at the specified interval. When adding or replacing coolant, use only Genuine NISSAN Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) or an equivalent product prepared with the correct mixture.

NOTE: Mixing a different coolant type with the specified coolant, or using water that is not distilled, may reduce the recommended coolant service interval and affect the condition of the cooling system.

Engine drive belts*: Inspect the engine drive belts for wear, fraying, cracking, oil contamination, and correct tension. Replace any belt that is damaged, excessively worn, or otherwise unsuitable for continued operation.

Engine oil and oil filter: Replace the engine oil and oil filter at the intervals shown in the maintenance schedule. Regular replacement helps remove contaminants from the lubrication system and supports proper engine operation.

Engine valve clearance*: Inspect the valve clearance if valve noise becomes noticeably louder or increases during engine operation. Adjust the clearance when inspection confirms that correction is necessary.

Fuel filter*: Periodic replacement is not required under the normal maintenance schedule.

(In-tank type filter) Fuel lines/connections*: Inspect the fuel hoses, pipes, and connections for leakage, looseness, cracking, deterioration, or other visible damage. Tighten loose connections and replace damaged components as necessary.

Fuel tank vapor system*: Check the vapor lines and related connections for leakage, looseness, deterioration, or damage. Secure loose connections and replace affected parts when required.

Spark plugs: Replace the spark plugs at the specified intervals to maintain consistent ignition and normal engine performance.

Install new spark plugs of the same type as those originally fitted to the vehicle. Using the correct plug type helps preserve the ignition characteristics specified for the Nissan Murano engine.

Chassis and body maintenance

Brake lines: Visually inspect the brake lines and hoses to confirm that they are routed and installed correctly and that their supports remain secure.

Check for chafing, cracks, corrosion, deterioration, and any evidence of fluid leakage. Replace damaged or deteriorated parts immediately to maintain proper brake system operation.

Brake pads and rotors: Inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear, damage, deterioration, and signs of fluid leakage in the surrounding brake components. Replace any part that is excessively worn, damaged, or no longer suitable for service.

Exhaust system: Visually inspect the exhaust pipes, muffler, hangers, and connections for leakage, cracks, corrosion, deterioration, looseness, and impact damage. Tighten loose connections or replace damaged components as necessary.

In-cabin microfilter: Replace the in-cabin microfilter at the specified intervals. This filter helps remove airborne particles from the air entering the passenger compartment through the ventilation system.

When the Nissan Murano is driven for prolonged periods in dusty conditions, inspect and replace the in-cabin microfilter more frequently because accumulated debris can restrict airflow.

Propeller shaft(s): On AWD models, inspect the propeller shaft or shafts for damage, looseness, deterioration, and signs of grease leakage.

Steering gear and linkage, axle and suspension parts, drive shaft boots: Inspect these components for looseness, damage, wear, and leakage of oil or grease. Check protective boots for splitting, cracking, or other deterioration. Vehicles operated under severe driving conditions should have these components inspected more frequently.

Tire rotation: Rotate the tires at the interval specified in the maintenance schedule to help promote more even tread wear and consistent handling.

During every tire rotation, inspect each tire for cuts, cracks, embedded objects, sidewall damage, and uneven or excessive wear. Replace any tire that is damaged or no longer suitable for safe use.

Transfer case oil, differential gear oil, coupling oil (AWD models): At the specified intervals, visually inspect the applicable housings and surrounding areas for signs of oil leakage. Any evidence of leakage should be investigated and corrected.

Transmission fluid/oil: Replace the transmission fluid or oil at the specified intervals using the procedure and fluid requirements applicable to the vehicle.

Off-Road Maintenance: Inspect the following items frequently whenever the Nissan Murano has been driven off-road through deep sand, mud, or water. These operating conditions can expose components to contamination, moisture, impact, and accelerated wear:

• Brake pads and rotors: Inspect for excessive wear, trapped debris, contamination, and damage that may affect braking performance.
• Brake lines and hoses: Check for impact damage, abrasion, leakage, looseness, or deterioration.
• Differential, transmission and transfer case oil: Inspect for signs of leakage, contamination, or other conditions requiring service.
• Steering linkage: Check for looseness, damage, restricted movement, and accumulated mud or debris.
• Propeller shaft(s) and front drive shafts: Inspect for damage, looseness, damaged boots, and leakage of grease or lubricant.
• Air cleaner filter: Inspect for excessive dust, sand, moisture, or debris and replace the filter when its condition requires it.
