Basic information

Before driving the Nissan Murano with passengers, luggage, or other cargo, verify that the total loaded weight does not exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or either Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) specified for the vehicle. The applicable GVWR and front and rear GAWR values are printed on the F.M.V.S.S./C.M.V.S.S. certification label.

Never exceed the vehicle load limit identified by the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo" on the Tire and Loading Information label. The number of people traveling in the vehicle must also remain within the "Seating Capacity" shown on that label. Both weight and seating limits must be observed whenever the vehicle is loaded.

To calculate "the combined weight of occupants and cargo," add together the weight of the driver and every passenger, then add the total weight of all luggage and cargo carried in the vehicle. The following illustration provides examples of how occupant weight affects the remaining cargo capacity.

Example

Steps For Determining Correct Load Limit

1. Find the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs." on the Tire and Loading Information placard for your vehicle. The value shown in place of "XXX" is the maximum combined weight permitted for occupants and cargo.

2. Calculate the combined weight of the driver and all passengers who will be riding in the Nissan Murano.

3. Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from the vehicle capacity stated as XXX kg or XXX lbs.

4. The remaining figure is the maximum available capacity for luggage and cargo. For example, if the stated capacity is 1,400 lbs. and the vehicle will carry five passengers weighing 150 lbs. each, their combined weight is 750 lbs. The remaining cargo and luggage capacity is therefore 650 lbs. (1,400 - 750 [5 x 150] = 650 lbs.).

5. Determine the combined weight of every piece of luggage and all other cargo that will be loaded into or onto the vehicle. This total must not exceed the available cargo and luggage capacity calculated in step 4.

6. When towing a trailer, part of the trailer load is transferred to the vehicle through the trailer connection. This transferred weight must be included when determining how much cargo and luggage the vehicle can safely carry.

Refer to the applicable towing information in this manual to determine how the trailer load reduces the available occupant, cargo, and luggage capacity of the vehicle.

Before operating a loaded vehicle, confirm again that the total vehicle weight does not exceed the GVWR and that the load carried by either axle remains below its applicable GAWR.

Check all tires and adjust them to the proper cold inflation pressures shown on the Tire and Loading Information label before driving the loaded vehicle.

Securing the load

Cargo area luggage hooks

Luggage hooks are installed in the cargo area at the locations shown. These hooks may be used with suitable ropes, straps, or similar restraints to help keep luggage and other cargo from sliding or shifting while the Nissan Murano is moving.

When securing cargo to a luggage hook located on the side finisher, do not apply more than 6.5 lbs. (29 N) of load to any single hook. Distribute the securing force appropriately rather than placing excessive load on one attachment point.

Each luggage hook located on the cargo floor must be subjected to less than 110 lbs. (490 N) of load. Use the hooks only within their stated limits and arrange the restraints so the cargo remains stable.

WARNING

• Secure all cargo properly with ropes, straps, or other suitable restraints to reduce the possibility of items sliding or shifting. Do not stack cargo higher than the seatbacks. During sudden braking, an abrupt maneuver, or a collision, unsecured cargo could move forward and cause personal injury.
• Items carried in the cargo area may contact and damage a child restraint top tether strap. Arrange and secure all cargo so it cannot interfere with the strap. A damaged top tether strap may not restrain the child correctly in a collision, which could result in serious injury or death.
• Never load the vehicle beyond the GVWR or the maximum front and rear GAWR values. Excessive weight may damage vehicle components or tires and may adversely change steering, braking, stability, and handling. This could lead to loss of vehicle control and personal injury.

Loading tips

• The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) must remain within the GVWR, and the load on each axle must remain within its GAWR, as specified on the F.M.V.S.S./C.M.V.S.S. certification label.
• Do not load both the front and rear axles up to their individual GAWR limits if doing so would cause the total vehicle weight to exceed the GVWR. All applicable weight ratings must be satisfied at the same time.

WARNING

• Use ropes, straps, or other appropriate restraints to secure all cargo and help prevent movement. Cargo must not be stacked above the seatbacks. Loose objects can be thrown through the passenger compartment during a sudden stop or collision and may cause personal injury.
• Do not load the Nissan Murano beyond its GVWR or either the front or rear GAWR. Overloading can damage vehicle components and tires and may alter the way the vehicle steers, brakes, and responds to driver input.

  This change in handling may cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a collision and personal injury.

• Overloading can shorten the service life of the vehicle and its tires. It may also create unsafe handling characteristics, increase braking distances, and contribute to premature tire failure. These conditions could result in a serious accident and personal injury. Damage or failures caused by overloading are not covered by the vehicle's warranty.

Measurement of weights

Secure all loose items before weighing the vehicle so the load cannot shift and alter the balance between the front and rear axles. With the Nissan Murano fully loaded as it will be driven, take it to a suitable vehicle scale and weigh the front and rear wheels separately to determine the load carried by each axle.

The measured load on the front axle must not exceed the front Gross Axle Weight Rating, and the rear axle load must not exceed the rear Gross Axle Weight Rating. The combined total of both axle loads must also remain within the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. These limits are listed on the vehicle certification label. If any rating is exceeded, reposition or remove passengers, cargo, or other items until the total vehicle weight and both individual axle loads are below their specified limits.
