Reporting safety defects

For USA

If you believe your Nissan Murano has a defect that could cause a collision or create a risk of serious injury or death, report the concern immediately to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and notify NISSAN as well. Provide clear details about the suspected defect, the circumstances in which it occurs, and any related warning signs or vehicle behavior.

If NHTSA receives similar reports from other vehicle owners, the agency may begin an investigation. When an investigation determines that a safety-related defect affects a group of vehicles, NHTSA may require the manufacturer to conduct a recall and remedy campaign. NHTSA does not, however, resolve individual disputes or service concerns between a vehicle owner, a dealer, and NISSAN.

To contact NHTSA, call the Vehicle Safety Hotline toll-free at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-888-275-9171), visit http://www.safercar.gov, or write to: Administrator, NHTSA, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, D.C. 20590. Additional information about recalls, safety investigations, and motor vehicle safety is also available at http://www.safercar.gov.

You may also report a Nissan Murano safety concern directly to NISSAN by contacting the Consumer Affairs Department toll-free at 1-800-NISSAN-1.

For Canada

If you believe your vehicle has a defect that could cause a collision or result in injury or death, notify Transport Canada immediately in addition to reporting the concern to NISSAN. Include relevant information about the vehicle and describe when and how the suspected defect occurs.

When Transport Canada receives complaints involving similar safety concerns, it may open an investigation. If the agency determines that a safety-related defect is present in a group of vehicles, it may request that NISSAN carry out a recall campaign. Transport Canada cannot become involved in individual disagreements or service matters between you, your dealer, and NISSAN.

You may contact Transport Canada's Defect Investigations and Recalls Division toll-free at 1-800-333-0510. Safety defects may also be reported online through the following official pages:

Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test

WARNING A Nissan Murano equipped with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) must never be tested on a two-wheel dynamometer, including equipment used by some states for emissions inspections, or on any similar testing device. Before the vehicle is placed on a dynamometer, clearly inform the testing facility personnel that it is equipped with AWD. Using unsuitable test equipment may damage the drivetrain or cause unexpected vehicle movement, potentially resulting in serious vehicle damage or personal injury.

Legal requirements in certain U.S. states and Canadian provinces may require the vehicle to be in what is known as the "ready condition" before it can undergo an Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test of the emission control system.

The Nissan Murano enters the "ready condition" after completing certain driving patterns that allow the onboard diagnostic system to perform the required checks. Under most circumstances, these checks are completed through ordinary vehicle operation.

If a powertrain system component has been repaired or the battery has been disconnected, the readiness status may be reset to "not ready." Before taking the vehicle for an I/M test, check its inspection and maintenance readiness condition. Place the ignition switch in the ON position without starting the engine. If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) remains steadily illuminated for 20 seconds and then flashes for 10 seconds, the I/M test status is "not ready." If the MIL does not begin flashing after the initial 20 seconds, the vehicle is in the "ready" condition. If assistance is needed to establish readiness or prepare the Nissan Murano for emissions testing, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer.
