Basic information

This Nissan Murano is equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR). The primary purpose of the EDR is to capture information during certain crash or near-crash events, such as air bag deployment or an impact with a road obstacle. The recorded information can help explain how the vehicle's systems responded immediately before and during the event. The EDR is designed to store data related to vehicle dynamics and safety system operation for a brief period, typically 30 seconds or less.

The EDR installed in the vehicle is designed to record information such as:

• How various vehicle systems were operating at the time of the event;
• Whether the driver and front passenger safety belts were buckled or fastened;
• How far, if at all, the driver was pressing the accelerator pedal and/or brake pedal;
• How fast the Nissan Murano was traveling; and
• Sounds are not recorded by the EDR.

This information may provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding a collision and any resulting injuries. The EDR records data only when a nontrivial crash or near-crash event occurs. It does not record information during normal driving, and it does not store personal details such as the driver's name, gender, age, or the location of the collision. However, another party, including law enforcement, may combine EDR information with personally identifying information routinely collected during a crash investigation.

Specialized equipment is required to retrieve and read information stored by the EDR, and access to either the vehicle or the recorder itself is necessary. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and a NISSAN dealer, other authorized parties, such as law enforcement agencies with the appropriate equipment, may be able to retrieve the recorded information when they have access to the Nissan Murano or its EDR.

EDR information will be accessed only with the consent of the vehicle owner or lessee, except when access is otherwise required or permitted by applicable law.

Additional data recording (on vehicles equipped with optional ProPILOT Assist)

If the vehicle is equipped with the optional ProPILOT Assist system, it also includes a supplemental data-recording function. This function is intended to help explain how ProPILOT Assist operated during certain nontrivial crash or near-crash situations. Depending on the installed version of the system, the supplemental recorder is designed to capture the information listed below.

For ProPILOT Assist

• Driver operation of the accelerator, brakes, steering, and related controls;
• Detection status of a vehicle ahead and the surrounding lane markers;
• Vehicle-related information, including the distance to the vehicle ahead and the Nissan Murano's lateral position within the lane;
• Information concerning the operation of ProPILOT Assist and other crash-avoidance features;
• Diagnostic information related to a ProPILOT Assist malfunction; and
• External images captured by the multi-sensing front camera, available only when the SRS air bag system or the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system is activated.

For ProPILOT Assist 2.1

• Driver operation of the accelerator, brakes, steering, and related controls;
• Detection status of the direction in which the driver's face is oriented and whether the driver's eyelids are open or closed;
• Information concerning the operation of ProPILOT Assist 2.1 and other crash-avoidance features;
• Detection information related to a vehicle ahead, lateral position, lane markers, and road structure;
• Vehicle information, including vehicle speed and position data obtained through the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS); and
• External images captured by the multi-sensing front camera, available only when the SRS air bag system or the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system is activated.

ProPILOT Assist does not record conversations, audio, other sounds, or images from inside the Nissan Murano. The supplemental recording function is limited to the vehicle and system-related information described in this section.

Specialized equipment and access to either the vehicle or the recording unit are required to retrieve and read this data. The recorded information will be accessed only with the consent of the vehicle owner or lessee, unless access is otherwise required or permitted by applicable law.

If the information is downloaded, NISSAN and third parties acting on behalf of NISSAN may use the recorded data to analyze system operation and support efforts to improve the safety performance of NISSAN vehicles.

NISSAN and third parties entrusted by NISSAN will not disclose or provide the recorded information to another party except under the following circumstances:

• When the vehicle owner or lessee has provided consent;
• In response to an official law enforcement request, court order, request from a governmental agency, or another legally enforceable demand;
• When the information is required as part of NISSAN's defense in litigation; or
• For research purposes after the information has been modified so that it can no longer be associated with a specific vehicle or vehicle owner.
