LATCH system lower anchor locations

Basic Information

Your vehicle is equipped with dedicated anchor points designed for use with LATCH-compatible child restraints. This system may also be referred to as ISOFIX or an ISOFIX-compatible system. When a compatible child restraint is installed with the LATCH system, the vehicle seat belt does not have to be used to secure the restraint unless the combined weight of the child and child restraint exceeds 65 lbs. (29.5 kg). If the combined weight is greater than 65 lbs. (29.5 kg), use the vehicle's seat belt, not the lower anchors, to install the child restraint. Always follow the child restraint manufacturer's instructions for installation, tightening, tether use, and final fit checks.

The LATCH anchor points in the Nissan Murano can be used to install child restraints in either rear outboard seating position or in the center rear seating position. Because the correct method can depend on the seating position and the child restraint design, refer to the related section of this Owner's Manual for specific guidance on installing a child restraint in the center rear seating position using the LATCH anchors.

WARNING Failure to follow the warnings and instructions for proper child restraint use and installation could result in serious injury or death to a child or other passengers during a sudden stop or collision:

• Only attach LATCH-compatible child restraints to the lower anchors shown in the illustration. Do not guess at anchor locations or attach the restraint to nearby hardware, trim, seat belt parts, or cargo points. For additional information, refer to the following sections of this Owner's Manual for the correct installation procedure.
• Inspect the lower anchors before attaching the child restraint by inserting your fingers into the lower anchor area. Feel carefully to confirm that there are no obstructions over the anchors, such as seat belt webbing, seat cushion material, or objects caught between the seat sections. The child restraint will not be secured properly if the lower anchors are blocked or if the connectors are not attached directly to the anchors.

  Child restraint anchorages are designed to withstand only the loads applied by correctly fitted child restraints.

  Under no circumstances should they be used to attach adult seat belts, cargo straps, accessories, equipment, or other items to the vehicle. Using the anchorages incorrectly could damage them. If an anchorage is damaged, the child restraint may not be properly installed, and a child could be seriously injured or killed in a collision. Correct anchor use is essential for safe child restraint installation in the Nissan Murano.

The LATCH lower anchors are located behind the anchor covers. A label on the seatback and on the cover helps identify the correct lower anchor positions, making it easier to locate the attachment points before installing a compatible child restraint.

LATCH in the center rear seating position

There are no LATCH anchors dedicated exclusively to the center rear seating position. However, the inboard LATCH anchors from the two outboard seating positions, shown by the arrows, can be used together to secure a CRS in the center rear seating position. These anchors are spaced at a distance OA of 17.2 in (438.5 mm). Before securing a CRS in this position, confirm that the CRS manufacturer's instructions specifically allow the use of LATCH anchors with the spacing shown above.

These anchor points are sometimes described as "shared anchors" or "borrowed anchors." A CRS with rigid lower attachments cannot be installed in the center seat using this arrangement. That type of CRS should only be installed in the outboard seating positions, where the lower anchors are positioned for direct attachment. In the Nissan Murano, correct center-seat installation depends on both the restraint design and the manufacturer's approved installation method.

WARNING Never attach two CRS attachments to the same LATCH anchor. Doing so may overload the anchor during a collision, which could increase the risk of serious injury or death to the occupant.

When installing a CRS in the center rear seating position using the inboard LATCH anchors, make sure any occupant or CRS in the outboard seating positions is properly restrained with the vehicle seat belt. Also check carefully that the center CRS does not interfere with the belts, seating positions, or restraint installation on either side.

If the outboard occupants cannot be properly restrained, use the vehicle seat belt to secure the CRS in the center seating position, or move the CRS to another suitable seating position instead. The installation should not compromise the safety or correct belt fit of any other passenger in the rear seat.

When installing a CRS in the center seating position of the Nissan Murano, use the seatback recline feature to align the left and right sides of the seatback and create one evenly reclined surface. Never install a CRS in the center seating position when one part of the seatback is reclined farther than the other, because this may create an uneven or unstable surface for the child restraint. Failure to align the seatbacks evenly before CRS installation could increase the risk of serious injury or death. Re-check that the CRS is still properly installed any time the seats are reclined, moved, or adjusted.

LATCH-compatible child restraints include two rigid or webbing-mounted attachments that connect to two lower anchors at designated seating positions in your vehicle. When this system is used correctly, the vehicle seat belt is not used to secure the child restraint. Before installation, check the child restraint for a label confirming that it is compatible with LATCH. The same information may also appear in the installation instructions supplied by the child restraint manufacturer.

When installing a child restraint in the Nissan Murano, carefully read and follow both this manual and the instructions provided with the child restraint. The attachment type, belt path, tightening method, and final movement check may vary by restraint design, so the manufacturer's procedure should be followed exactly.

• Do not allow cargo to contact the top tether strap when it is attached to the top tether anchor. Secure all cargo properly so it cannot press against, pull on, rub, or damage the tether strap. Cargo that is not secured, or cargo that contacts the top tether strap, may damage the strap during a collision. If the top tether strap is damaged, the child restraint may not perform as intended, and a child could be seriously injured or killed.
• Child restraint anchorages are designed to withstand only the loads applied by correctly fitted child restraints.

  Under no circumstances should these anchorages be used for adult seat belts, harnesses, cargo straps, accessories, or for attaching any other equipment to the vehicle.

  Using the anchorages for anything other than a properly installed child restraint could damage them. If the anchorages are damaged, the child restraint may not be secured correctly, and a child could be seriously injured or killed in a collision.

Top tether anchor point locations

Anchor points are located on the back of the rear seats. These points are used for the top tether strap when the child restraint manufacturer requires or recommends tether use for the selected installation.
