Front passenger's side

The knee air bag is located in the knee bolster on the driver's side and on the front passenger's side. All information, cautions, and warnings in this manual apply and must be followed. The knee air bag is designed to inflate in higher severity frontal collisions, although it may also inflate if the forces from another type of collision are similar to those of a higher severity frontal impact. In the Nissan Murano, this system works as part of the supplemental restraint system and is intended to support proper occupant protection when deployment conditions are met.

It may not inflate in certain collisions, depending on the direction, force, and characteristics of the impact.

Vehicle damage, or the absence of visible damage, is not always an indication of proper knee air bag operation. Deployment is determined by crash forces and system inputs rather than by exterior damage alone.

When the knee air bag inflates, a fairly loud noise may be heard, followed by the release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. However, care should be taken not to inhale it, because it may cause irritation, coughing, or a choking sensation. Occupants with a history of asthma, allergies, or other breathing conditions should get fresh air promptly when it is safe to do so.

The knee air bag helps cushion the impact force on the knees of the driver and front passenger. By helping manage lower-body movement during certain frontal collisions, it can contribute to reducing the risk of serious injury.

However, an inflating knee air bag deploys with considerable force and may cause abrasions, bruising, or other injuries during activation. The knee air bag provides restraint to the lower body, but it does not replace correct seat belt use, proper seating posture, or the protection provided by the other restraint systems.

The knee air bag inflates quickly in order to help protect the occupants. Because deployment happens with speed and force, the risk of injury can increase if an occupant is sitting too close to, resting against, or placing objects near this air bag module during inflation. The knee air bag will deflate quickly after the collision is over, or the knee air bag may remain inflated for a short time depending on the deployment condition.

The knee air bag operates only when the ignition switch is placed in the ON position.

After placing the ignition switch in the ON position, the supplemental air bag warning light illuminates. The supplemental air bag warning light will turn off after about 7 seconds if the system is operational. This brief illumination is part of the normal system check in the Nissan Murano.

WARNING

• Do not place any objects between the knee bolster and the driver's or passenger's seat. Loose items, accessories, bags, or other objects in this area may become dangerous projectiles and cause injury if a knee air bag inflates.
• Right after inflation, the knee air bag system components will be hot. Do not touch these parts immediately after deployment; contact with heated components may cause severe burns. Wait until the area is safe before approaching or handling any air bag-related parts.
• No unauthorized changes should be made to any components or wiring of the knee air bag system. This precaution helps prevent damage to the system, accidental inflation, improper deployment, or reduced protection during a collision.
• Do not make unauthorized changes to your vehicle's electrical system or suspension system. Improper changes in these areas could affect proper operation of the knee air bag system and may interfere with how the supplemental restraint system responds in a crash.
• Tampering with the knee air bag system may result in serious personal injury. For example, do not change the driver or passenger knee bolster, attach material over the deployment area, or install additional trim material around the knee air bag. Any added material may obstruct deployment or change how the system performs.
• It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for work on and around the knee air bag. It is also recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for installation of electrical equipment. The SRS wiring harnesses* should not be modified or disconnected. Unauthorized electrical test equipment and probing devices should not be used on the knee air bag system, because improper handling may damage sensitive components or create an unintended deployment risk.

*The SRS wiring harness or connectors are yellow or orange for easy identification.

Seat belt with pretensioner(s) (front and rear outboard seats)

WARNING

• The pretensioner(s) cannot be reused after activation. Once activated, they must be replaced together with the retractor and buckle as a unit so the seat belt system can continue to provide proper restraint performance.
• If the vehicle becomes involved in a collision but the pretensioner(s) are not activated, be sure to have the pretensioner system checked and, if necessary, replaced. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service, because collision forces can affect restraint components even when activation does not occur.
• No unauthorized changes should be made to any components or wiring of the pretensioner system. This helps prevent damage, accidental activation, or improper system performance. Tampering with the pretensioner system may result in serious personal injury.
• It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for work on and around the pretensioner system. It is also recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for installation of electrical equipment. Unauthorized electrical test equipment and probing devices should not be used on the pretensioner system, because incorrect testing or handling may damage the system or create an activation hazard.
• If you need to dispose of the pretensioner(s) or scrap the vehicle, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service. Incorrect disposal procedures could cause personal injury, because pretensioner components require proper handling.

The pretensioner system may activate with the supplemental air bag system in certain types of collisions. Working with the seat belt retractor, the pretensioner(s) help tighten the seat belt when the vehicle becomes involved in certain collision conditions, helping restrain front and rear outboard seat occupants more effectively. In the Nissan Murano, the pretensioner system is part of the overall restraint strategy and works together with correctly worn seat belts.

The pretensioner(s) are encased within the seat belt retractor and at the seat belt anchor affixed to the floor of the vehicle. Their placement allows the system to act directly on the seat belt assembly when activation conditions are met.

These seat belts are used the same way as conventional seat belts. Occupants should buckle them normally, position the belt correctly across the body, and make sure the belt is not twisted, loose, or routed improperly.

When pretensioner(s) activate, smoke is released and a loud noise may be heard. This is a normal result of pretensioner activation and does not by itself indicate a fire.

This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. Care should be taken not to inhale it, as it may cause irritation, coughing, or choking. Those with a history of a breathing condition should get fresh air promptly when it is safe to leave or ventilate the area.

After the pretensioner(s') activation, load limiters allow the seat belt to release webbing, if necessary, to help reduce forces against the chest. This function supports occupant restraint while helping manage the load applied by the belt during certain collisions.

The supplemental air bag warning light is used to indicate malfunctions in the pretensioner system.

If the operation of the supplemental air bag warning light indicates there is a malfunction, have the system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service so the pretensioner system, warning light, and related SRS components can be inspected using the proper diagnostic procedure.
