WARNING

• Never leave children or adults who would normally require assistance unattended inside the Nissan Murano.

  Pets must not be left alone in the vehicle either.

  Unattended occupants could accidentally operate the vehicle or its equipment, causing injury to themselves or others. In warm or sunny weather, the temperature inside a closed vehicle can also rise rapidly to a level capable of causing severe or potentially fatal injury to people and animals.

• Secure all cargo properly with suitable ropes, straps, or other restraints to prevent it from sliding or shifting while the vehicle is moving. Do not stack cargo higher than the seatbacks, because unsecured or improperly positioned items may be thrown forward during sudden braking or a collision and cause personal injury.
• Do not exceed the specified capacity of the roof rack. Excessive roof load raises the vehicle's center of gravity and may negatively affect handling, steering response, and stability. This loss of control could lead to a collision resulting in serious injury or death.

Exhaust gas (carbon monoxide)

WARNING

• Never breathe exhaust gases. They contain carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that is extremely dangerous and can cause unconsciousness or death without warning.
• If you believe exhaust fumes are entering the passenger compartment, open all windows fully while driving and have the Nissan Murano inspected immediately. Do not ignore an unusual exhaust odor or other sign that gases may be entering the cabin.
• Do not operate the engine in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area, such as a closed garage, where exhaust gases can accumulate quickly.
• Do not leave the vehicle parked with the engine running for an extended period, particularly in an area where exhaust gases could collect around or beneath the vehicle.
• Keep the liftgate and rear vent windows closed while driving. If they remain open, exhaust gases may be drawn into the passenger compartment. When driving with the liftgate or rear vent windows open is unavoidable, follow these precautions:
  1. Open all windows to increase ventilation throughout the passenger compartment.
  2. Switch air recirculation off and set the fan control to a high speed so that fresh outside air circulates through the cabin.
• If electrical wiring or another cable must be routed to a trailer through a seal around the liftgate or vehicle body, follow the equipment manufacturer's installation recommendations carefully. Incorrect routing or a damaged seal may allow carbon monoxide to enter the vehicle.
• Have the exhaust system and vehicle body inspected by a qualified mechanic whenever any of the following conditions applies:
  1. The vehicle is raised for maintenance, repair, or inspection.
  2. You suspect that exhaust fumes are entering the passenger compartment.
  3. You notice a change in the normal sound of the exhaust system.
  4. The vehicle has been involved in a collision that damaged the exhaust system, underbody, or rear section of the vehicle.

Three-way catalyst

The three-way catalyst is an emission-control component installed within the Nissan Murano exhaust system. It is designed to help limit the amount of harmful pollutants released through the exhaust.

During engine operation, exhaust gases pass through the three-way catalyst, where very high operating temperatures support the chemical reactions that reduce exhaust pollutants. Because of this heat, the surrounding exhaust components can remain extremely hot during and after driving.

WARNING

• Exhaust gases and exhaust-system components become extremely hot. Keep people, animals, and combustible materials away from the exhaust system to prevent burns or fire.
• Do not stop or park the vehicle over dry grass, waste paper, cloth, rags, or other flammable materials. Contact with hot exhaust components may ignite these materials and start a fire.

CAUTION

• Do not use leaded gasoline. Deposits produced by leaded fuel can seriously reduce the three-way catalyst's ability to control exhaust emissions and may permanently damage the component.
• Keep the engine properly maintained and operating as intended. Malfunctions in the ignition, fuel-injection, or electrical systems may allow an excessively rich fuel mixture to enter the three-way catalyst and cause it to overheat. Do not continue driving if the engine misfires, performance drops noticeably, or another unusual operating condition develops.

  Have the Nissan Murano inspected promptly to prevent further damage. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.

• Avoid driving when the fuel level is extremely low. Running out of fuel may cause the engine to misfire, allowing unburned fuel to enter and damage the three-way catalyst.
• Do not race or repeatedly rev the engine while it is warming up, because unnecessary high engine speed can place additional stress on the emission-control system.
• Do not attempt to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. Use an approved starting procedure to avoid possible engine or exhaust-system damage.
