Basic Information

WARNING Never operate the push-button ignition switch while the vehicle is moving unless an emergency makes it necessary. The engine will stop if the ignition switch is pressed three consecutive times within 1.5 seconds or pressed and held for longer than 2 seconds. If the engine shuts off while the Nissan Murano is being driven, power assistance and vehicle control may be affected, increasing the risk of a collision, serious injury, or both.

When the ignition switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, the switch illuminates and the ignition mode changes without starting the engine. This allows the driver to operate the vehicle's electrical systems according to the selected ignition position.

Press the center of the ignition switch as follows:

• Press it once to change the ignition position to ON.
• Press it again to change the ignition position to OFF.

The shift position can be moved out of P (Park) only when the ignition switch is in the ON position and the brake pedal is firmly depressed. This interlock helps prevent unintended movement of the Nissan Murano.

If the vehicle battery is discharged, the ignition switch cannot be moved from the LOCK position. Electrical power must be restored before normal ignition-switch operation can resume.

Operational indicators, status messages, and relevant warnings may appear on the vehicle information display. Check these messages whenever the ignition switch is operated, especially if the engine does not start or the Intelligent Key is not detected.

Operating range

The Intelligent Key functions can be used only when the key is located within the specified operating range. For the engine-start function, the system must detect the Intelligent Key inside the passenger compartment.

When the Intelligent Key battery is nearly discharged, or when strong radio waves or electrical interference are present near the vehicle, the effective operating range may become narrower. Under these conditions, the Nissan Murano may not detect the key reliably, and the Intelligent Key system may respond slowly or fail to operate as expected.

If the Intelligent Key is anywhere within the operating range, another person inside the vehicle may be able to press the ignition switch and start the engine even if that person is not carrying the key. Do not leave the Intelligent Key inside the vehicle or within reach of unauthorized occupants.

The operating range for the engine-start function is the interior of the vehicle, indicated by area 1 in the illustration.

• The luggage area is not considered part of the specified operating range. However, depending on the exact position of the Intelligent Key and surrounding conditions, the key may still be detected and function.
• If the Intelligent Key is placed on the instrument panel or stored inside the glove box, storage bin, or door pocket, nearby materials or the location itself may interfere with detection, and the key may not function correctly.
• If the Intelligent Key is positioned outside the vehicle but very close to a door or window, the system may still detect it. Avoid leaving the key near the exterior of the vehicle, particularly when the Nissan Murano is parked or unattended.
