The engine is equipped with a protection mode designed to reduce the risk of damage when the coolant temperature rises excessively. This may occur under demanding conditions, such as climbing steep grades in hot weather while carrying a heavy load or towing a trailer. When the engine temperature reaches a specified level, the Nissan Murano may automatically adjust several operating functions to help control heat buildup.

• The engine coolant temperature gauge will move toward the H position, indicating that the coolant temperature is approaching the high range.
• Available engine power may be reduced to decrease the load on the engine and limit further temperature increase.
• The air conditioning cooling function may switch off automatically for a short period, although the blower will continue operating and circulating air through the passenger compartment.

When engine protection mode is active, engine output and, in some conditions, vehicle speed may decrease. The driver can continue controlling speed with the accelerator pedal, but the Nissan Murano may not accelerate as quickly or reach the requested speed. The transmission will continue to downshift or upshift when the prescribed shift points are reached, and manual shifting remains available when appropriate.

As driving conditions become less demanding and the engine coolant temperature begins to fall, more power will gradually become available. Vehicle speed can then be increased with the accelerator pedal, and the air conditioning cooling function will automatically resume once normal operating conditions have been restored.

The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate if the engine coolant temperature does not decrease or if the air conditioning cooling function does not turn back on. If the MIL is the only warning that remains illuminated, the vehicle generally does not need to be towed; however, the Nissan Murano should be inspected as soon as practical. NISSAN recommends visiting a NISSAN dealer for diagnosis and service.

WARNING Engine overheating can cause a noticeable reduction in power and vehicle speed. The available speed may become lower than the flow of surrounding traffic, increasing the risk of a collision. Drive with particular caution and avoid sudden maneuvers. If the vehicle cannot maintain a safe speed, move carefully to the side of the road and stop in a secure location. Allow the engine to cool until normal operation returns before continuing.

CAUTION Do not continue running the engine while the engine oil pressure warning light is illuminated. Insufficient oil pressure can cause severe internal engine damage within a very short time, and this type of damage may not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so.
