Basic information

The Idling Stop System is designed to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and engine noise while the Nissan Murano is temporarily stationary.

  • When the vehicle comes to a stop and all required operating conditions are satisfied, the engine switches off automatically.
  • When the driver releases the brake pedal to begin moving again, the engine restarts automatically so the vehicle can continue driving.

WARNING If the vehicle begins moving at approximately 1 mph (2 km/h) or more, such as while stopped on a downhill slope, the engine may restart while it is temporarily off through the Idling Stop System. Immediately depress the brake pedal firmly to stop the vehicle and prevent unintended movement that could result in a collision.

CAUTION At the end of a journey, stop the engine by pressing the ignition switch to the OFF position, and then lock the Nissan Murano in the normal manner.

Placing the ignition switch in the OFF position shuts down the vehicle’s electrical systems. Failing to switch the ignition off properly may allow electrical equipment to continue consuming power and could discharge the battery.

NOTE: The Idling Stop System will not activate under any of the following conditions:

  • The engine has been started and allowed to idle without the vehicle being driven. The system may require normal driving before automatic engine stopping becomes available.
  • The engine coolant temperature is too low for Idling Stop operation.
  • The available battery charge is low.
  • The battery temperature is too low.
  • The vehicle is still moving and has not come to a complete stop.
  • The negative pressure available for brake-booster assistance has decreased.
  • The engine hood is opened while the engine is running.
  • The engine is started while the hood remains open.
  • The driver’s seat belt is not fastened.
  • The driver’s door is open.
  • The steering wheel is being operated.
  • The Idling Stop System indicator is blinking.
  • The fan-speed control is set to any position other than “OFF” (0) while airflow is directed to the front defroster position.
  • The front defroster switch is turned on.
  • The rear window defroster switch is turned on.
  • The cabin temperature is below approximately 60ºF (15ºC), unless the Air Conditioning ECO customization option is selected and ECO driving mode is active.
  • The cabin temperature is above approximately 86ºF (30ºC), unless the Air Conditioning ECO customization option is selected and ECO driving mode is active. When the air conditioner is switched off, the Idling Stop System can operate.
  • The Idling Stop OFF switch has been turned on to disable automatic engine stopping.
  • Electrical power consumption is high.
  • The vehicle is being operated at a high altitude.
  • The accelerator pedal is depressed.
  • The shift position is set to any range other than D (Drive).
  • The brake pedal is not depressed firmly enough to hold the vehicle securely.
  • The Nissan Murano is stopped on a steeply sloping road.

NOTE: The Idling Stop System may not activate when the Intelligent Key is outside the vehicle and any door is opened or closed.

The engine will not restart solely because the brake pedal is released while the Idling Stop System is active under the following conditions. The engine may still restart if another restart condition occurs:

  • The automatic brake hold system is active and continues holding the vehicle stationary.
  • The engine hood is open.

NOTE: Idling Stop operation may take longer than usual to become available under the following conditions:

  • The battery has been discharged or its available charge has become low.
  • The outside temperature is unusually low or high.
  • The battery has been replaced, or a battery terminal was disconnected for an extended period and then reconnected. The system may require time to reassess battery and vehicle operating conditions.

NOTE: When the Idling Stop System indicator light is illuminated and the engine has been stopped automatically, the engine will restart under at least one of the following conditions:

  • The available vacuum pressure for the brake system becomes insufficient because the brake pedal has been depressed repeatedly.
  • The driver’s seat belt is unfastened or the driver’s door is opened.
  • Battery voltage becomes low because of electrical demand from vehicle equipment such as the headlights or heaters, or from auxiliary devices connected to the interior 12-volt power socket.
  • The vehicle reaches a speed above approximately 1 mph (2 km/h), including movement that may occur while stopped on a slope.
  • The rear window defroster is operated.
  • The cabin temperature falls below approximately 60ºF (15ºC), unless the Air Conditioning ECO customization option is selected and ECO driving mode is active.
  • The cabin temperature rises above approximately 86ºF (30ºC), unless the Air Conditioning ECO customization option is selected and ECO driving mode is active. When the air conditioner is off, the Idling Stop System can continue operating.
  • The front defroster is switched on.
  • More than three minutes have passed since the engine was stopped by the Idling Stop System.
  • The accelerator pedal is depressed to prepare the vehicle for movement.
  • The steering wheel is operated.

    The steering wheel may temporarily require more effort while the engine is stopped. This is an operating characteristic and does not indicate a malfunction.

  • The available battery charge becomes low.
  • Electrical power consumption becomes high.
  • The shift position is moved to any range other than D (Drive).
  • The Idling Stop OFF switch is pressed.
  • The negative pressure required for brake-system assistance becomes insufficient after the brake pedal is depressed several times.

NOTE: The Idling Stop System may not activate when the Intelligent Key is not inside the vehicle and any door is opened or closed.

NOTE: The following condition prevents the Idling Stop System from restarting the engine automatically. The engine must then be started by operating the ignition switch:

  • The engine hood is open.

Use the Idling Stop System during temporary stops, such as while waiting at a traffic light. If the Nissan Murano will remain parked or stationary for an extended period, turn off the engine with the ignition switch rather than relying on automatic engine stopping.

When the engine is switched off by the Idling Stop System, the heating, cooling, and dehumidifying functions are temporarily deactivated. To keep these climate-control functions operating continuously, disable the Idling Stop System by pressing the Idling Stop OFF switch.

Retrograde movement control function

The retrograde movement control function is designed to reduce backward movement on an incline while the Idling Stop System is active. It provides assistance during the brief transition as the driver moves their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal to begin driving the vehicle uphill.
