Maintenance precautions

Whenever you inspect or perform maintenance on your Nissan Murano, work carefully and follow appropriate safety procedures to reduce the risk of accidental injury or vehicle damage. The precautions below apply to general owner maintenance and should be observed throughout every inspection, adjustment, or replacement procedure.

WARNING

• Park the vehicle on a firm, level surface, apply the parking brake securely, and block the wheels to prevent unintended movement. Press the park button to place the transmission in the P (Park) position before beginning any work.
• Make sure the ignition switch is in the OFF or LOCK position before replacing components or carrying out repairs.
• If the engine must remain running during an inspection, keep your hands, hair, clothing, and tools well away from cooling fans, drive belts, and all other moving components.
• Secure or remove loose clothing before working on the vehicle. Remove rings, watches, bracelets, and other jewelry that could become caught in moving parts or contact electrical components.
• Always wear suitable eye protection when inspecting, servicing, or repairing your Nissan Murano.
• The vehicle is equipped with an automatic engine cooling fan that may start unexpectedly, even when the ignition switch is in the OFF position and the engine is not operating. To reduce the risk of injury, disconnect the negative battery cable before performing work near the fan.
• If the engine must be operated inside a garage or another enclosed area, provide sufficient ventilation so exhaust gases can escape safely.
• Never place any part of your body beneath the vehicle while it is supported only by a jack. When work under the vehicle is necessary, support it securely with appropriate safety stands.
• Keep open flames, sparks, and other ignition sources away from the fuel tank and battery.
• The fuel lines on gasoline-engine models remain under high pressure even after the engine has been switched off. It is recommended that fuel filter and fuel line service be performed by a NISSAN dealer.

CAUTION

• Do not work beneath the hood while the engine and surrounding components are hot. Turn off the engine and allow sufficient time for the engine compartment to cool before beginning maintenance.
• Avoid direct contact with used engine oil and coolant. Improper disposal of engine oil, coolant, or other vehicle fluids can harm the environment. Collect and dispose of all fluids in accordance with applicable local regulations.
• Never leave wiring harnesses associated with the engine or automatic transmission disconnected while the ignition switch is in the ON position.
• Never connect or disconnect the battery or any transistorized electrical component while the ignition switch is in the ON position, as electrical damage may occur.

NOTE: If the battery is completely discharged, the transmission cannot be shifted manually to another position.
