WARNING Head restraints/headrests are designed to work together with the other vehicle safety systems. In certain rear-end collisions, they may provide additional protection by helping support the head and neck area when they are correctly installed and adjusted.

Adjustable head restraints/headrests must be positioned properly as described in this section. After another person has used the seat, check the adjustment again before driving or allowing an occupant to ride there. Do not attach objects to the head restraint/headrest stalk, except for Genuine NISSAN accessories that have been specifically tested for use with the vehicle's head restraint/headrest stalk. Do not remove the head restraint/headrest for normal use.

Do not use any seating position if the head restraint/headrest has been removed. A seat without its required head restraint/headrest does not provide the same intended level of occupant support.

If the head restraint/headrest was removed for cleaning, cargo clearance, service access, or any other reason, reinstall it and adjust it correctly before an occupant uses that seating position again.

Failure to follow these instructions can reduce the effectiveness of the head restraints/headrests in the Nissan Murano. This may increase the risk of serious injury or death in a collision.

The illustration shows the seating positions equipped with head restraints/headrests and helps identify which positions use each type of upper seat support.

Indicates the seating position is equipped with a head restraint.

Indicates the seating position is equipped with a headrest.

+ Indicates the seating position is not equipped with a head restraint or headrest, if applicable.

• Your vehicle is equipped with a head restraint/headrest that may be integrated, adjustable, or non-adjustable depending on the seating position and equipment.
• Adjustable head restraints/headrests have multiple notches along the stalk(s), allowing the restraint to lock into a selected height position rather than moving freely.
• The non-adjustable head restraints/headrests use a single locking notch to secure the component to the seat frame in its designed position.
• Proper Adjustment:
  • For the adjustable type, align the head restraint/headrest so the center of your ear is approximately level with the center of the head restraint/headrest. This alignment helps the restraint support the head area more effectively.
  • If your ear position remains higher than the recommended alignment even after adjustment, place the head restraint/headrest at the highest available position.
• If the head restraint/headrest has been removed, make sure it is reinstalled fully, locked securely, and adjusted correctly before anyone rides in that designated seating position.

Adjustable head restraint/headrest components

1. Removable head restraint/headrest, designed to be taken out only when removal is necessary and reinstalled before the seat is used.
2. Multiple notches, which provide the locking positions for height adjustment.
3. Lock knob, used to release or secure the head restraint/headrest during adjustment or removal.
4. Stalks, which slide into the seatback and support the head restraint/headrest structure.

Non-adjustable head restraint/ headrest components

1. Removable head restraint/headrest, intended to remain installed whenever the seating position is occupied.
2. Single notch, used to lock the head restraint/headrest into its fixed installed position.
3. Lock knob, used when releasing the component for removal or confirming that it is secured.
4. Stalks, which fit into the seatback and hold the head restraint/headrest in place.

Remove

Use the following procedure to remove the head restraint/headrest. Removal should be done carefully so the stalks, lock knob, and seatback trim are not damaged.

1. Pull the head restraint/headrest upward to the highest position, keeping it straight as it moves along the stalk guides.

2. Push and hold the lock knob to release the locking mechanism.

3. While holding the lock knob, remove the head restraint/headrest from the seat by lifting it fully out of the seatback.

4. Store the head restraint/headrest properly in a secure place so it is not loose inside the vehicle. A loose component can move during sudden braking or a collision.

5. Reinstall and properly adjust the head restraint/headrest before an occupant uses the seating position in the Nissan Murano.
