Fuel recommendation
Basic information
Use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index), equivalent to a Research Octane Number of 91. Selecting fuel that meets this minimum rating is necessary for proper Nissan Murano operation and helps ensure that the engine and emission control equipment function as intended.
CAUTION
- Only vehicles displaying an E-85 label on the fuel filler door are designed to operate on E-85. Do not use E-85 in a Nissan Murano that does not have this label. Filling a vehicle with E-85 when it is not specifically designed for that fuel may damage the fuel system or other vehicle components.
- Use only fuel that meets the specifications listed for the vehicle. Gasoline that does not satisfy these requirements may adversely affect the emission control system, reduce proper vehicle performance, and influence applicable warranty coverage.
- Never use leaded gasoline under any circumstances. Leaded fuel will damage the three-way catalyst and may prevent the emission control system from operating correctly.
- Do not use fuel containing more than 15% ethanol. The vehicle is not designed to operate on gasoline with
an ethanol concentration above 15%.
Using fuel containing more than 15% ethanol in a vehicle that was not specifically engineered for it may adversely affect the emission control devices and related vehicle systems.
Damage caused by using fuel with an ethanol content above the permitted limit is not covered by the NISSAN New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Do not use gasoline containing the octane booster methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
Fuel containing MMT may adversely affect Nissan Murano performance and emissions. Because fuel dispensers are not always labeled to show whether MMT is present, contact the gasoline retailer or service station operator when confirmation is needed. Federal and California laws prohibit MMT in reformulated gasoline.
- U.S. government regulations require ethanol dispensing pumps to display a small square orange-and-black label. This label identifies the common abbreviation for the fuel or shows the appropriate ethanol percentage used in that region. Check the pump label before refueling to confirm that the ethanol concentration is suitable for the vehicle.
Gasoline specifications
NISSAN recommends using gasoline that complies with World-Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC) specifications whenever this type of fuel is available. The WWFC specifications were developed by multiple automobile manufacturers to support vehicle performance and the effective operation of emission control systems. Ask the service station manager or gasoline retailer whether the fuel being sold meets the applicable WWFC requirements before filling the Nissan Murano.
Reformulated gasoline
Some fuel suppliers produce reformulated gasoline that is specially designed to reduce vehicle emissions. When selecting reformulated gasoline, make sure it also meets the required octane rating and the other fuel specifications listed for the vehicle.
NISSAN supports initiatives aimed at improving air quality and recommends using reformulated gasoline whenever it is available and meets all fuel requirements specified for the Nissan Murano.
Gasoline containing oxygenates
Some fuel suppliers offer gasoline blended with oxygenates such as ethanol, Methyl Tert-butyl Ether (MTBE), or methanol. The presence and concentration of these substances may not always be clearly advertised at the fuel station.
NISSAN does not recommend using fuel when its oxygenate content or compatibility with your Nissan Murano cannot be readily confirmed. When the fuel composition is unclear, ask the service station manager or gasoline retailer for detailed information before refueling.
If oxygenate-blended gasoline is used, observe the following precautions carefully. Fuel that does not meet these requirements may cause driveability concerns, reduced vehicle performance, and/or damage to fuel system components.
- The gasoline must be unleaded and have an octane rating no lower than the minimum rating recommended for unleaded gasoline in the Nissan Murano.
- If an oxygenate blend other than a methanol blend is used, the fuel must contain no more than 15% oxygenate.
- If a methanol blend is used, it must contain no more than 5% methanol, also known as methyl alcohol
or wood alcohol. The blend must also include a suitable amount of appropriate cosolvents and corrosion
inhibitors. Methanol-blended fuel that is not properly formulated with these additives may damage the
fuel system and/or cause vehicle performance problems.
At this time, sufficient information is not available to confirm that all methanol blends are suitable for use in NISSAN vehicles. For this reason, verify the fuel composition and compatibility before using a methanol blend.
If driveability problems such as engine stalling or difficult hot starting occur after using oxygenate-blended gasoline, immediately switch to non-oxygenated gasoline or to fuel containing a low concentration of MTBE. If the symptoms continue after changing fuel, the vehicle should be inspected.
Use care to prevent gasoline from spilling onto the vehicle while refueling.
Gasoline containing oxygenates may damage painted surfaces. If fuel is spilled, address it promptly to reduce the possibility of paint damage.
E-15 fuel
E-15 is a fuel mixture containing approximately 15% fuel ethanol and 85% unleaded gasoline.
E-15 may be used only in vehicles specifically designed to operate on E-15 fuel. U.S. government regulations require fuel ethanol dispensing pumps to display a small, square, orange-and-black label showing the common fuel abbreviation or the applicable ethanol percentage for that region. Check the pump label before refueling the Nissan Murano to confirm that the fuel is suitable for the vehicle.
E-85 fuel
E-85 is a fuel mixture containing approximately 85% fuel ethanol and 15% unleaded gasoline. It should be used only in a vehicle specifically designed and identified for operation with E-85.
E-85 is intended only for use in a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV). The Nissan Murano is not designed to operate on E-85, so this fuel must not be used in the vehicle. Using E-85 in a vehicle that is not specifically approved for it may adversely affect operation and damage fuel system components.

Fuel containing MMT
MMT, short for methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, is an additive used to increase the octane rating of gasoline.
NISSAN does not recommend using gasoline that contains MMT. Fuel blended with this additive may adversely affect Nissan Murano performance and the operation of the emissions control system. Some fuel pumps identify the presence of MMT, but this information is not displayed at every station. When the fuel composition cannot be confirmed from the pump label, ask the gasoline retailer for additional details before filling the tank.
Aftermarket fuel additives
NISSAN does not recommend using commercially available aftermarket fuel additives, including fuel injector cleaners, octane boosters, intake valve deposit removers, and similar products. Many additives marketed for removing gum, varnish, or deposits contain active solvents or related ingredients that may damage the fuel system or engine. Use of these products is therefore not recommended for the Nissan Murano.
Octane rating tips
Using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating below the recommended level may cause persistent, heavy "spark knock," which is heard as a metallic rapping sound from the engine. Severe or prolonged spark knock can result in engine damage. If heavy spark knock continues while using gasoline with the specified octane rating, or if steady knocking is heard while maintaining a constant speed on a level road, have the condition corrected by a NISSAN dealer. Continuing to operate the vehicle without correcting persistent spark knock is considered vehicle misuse, for which NISSAN is not responsible.
Incorrect ignition timing may cause spark knock, engine after-run, and/or overheating. These conditions can also contribute to excessive fuel consumption or engine damage. If any of these symptoms occur, have the Nissan Murano inspected. It is recommended that the vehicle be serviced by a NISSAN dealer.
Occasional light spark knock may be heard briefly during acceleration or while driving uphill. This is generally not a cause for concern. A short period of light spark knock under heavy engine load may occur while the engine is operating in a range that provides the greatest fuel benefit.
