Selecting the correct oil

Choosing engine oil with the correct grade, quality level, and viscosity is essential for maintaining satisfactory engine performance and service life. The oil selected for the Nissan Murano must meet the specified requirements rather than being chosen only by brand or price.

NISSAN recommends using an energy-conserving engine oil to support improved fuel economy while providing the lubrication required for normal engine operation.

Select only engine oils that meet the applicable American Petroleum Institute (API) certification or International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) certification, as well as the specified SAE viscosity standard. Check all three requirements when selecting replacement oil.

Approved oils display the API certification mark on the front of the container. Engine oil that does not carry the required quality label should not be used in the Nissan Murano, because it may not provide the specified level of protection and could result in engine damage.

Oil additives

NISSAN does not recommend adding aftermarket oil additives. Additional additives are unnecessary when the correct engine oil is used and the prescribed maintenance intervals are followed.

Do not use oil that contains foreign material, has become contaminated, or was previously used in another engine. Only clean engine oil of the specified type and quality should be added during service.

Oil viscosity

Engine oil viscosity, or thickness, changes as temperature rises or falls. For this reason, select the viscosity according to the temperatures in which the vehicle is expected to operate before the next scheduled oil change. Using a viscosity other than the one recommended for those conditions may prevent the oil from performing as intended and could cause serious engine damage.

Selecting the correct oil filter

Your new NISSAN vehicle is factory-equipped with a high-quality Genuine NISSAN oil filter. When replacement is required, install a Genuine NISSAN oil filter or an equivalent filter that meets the same quality and performance requirements. The importance of using the correct filter is explained further under "Change intervals."

Change intervals

The recommended engine oil and oil filter replacement intervals are based on the use of oils and filters that meet the specified quality standards. Using engine oil or filters of unsuitable quality, selecting an incorrect viscosity, or exceeding the recommended service intervals may shorten engine life. Engine damage caused by improper maintenance or by the use of incorrect oil, filter quality, and/or viscosity is not covered by the NISSAN New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

The Nissan Murano engine was filled with high-quality engine oil during production. There is no need to replace this factory-fill oil before the first recommended service interval. After that point, the appropriate oil and filter replacement frequency depends partly on how and where the vehicle is operated.

Operation under any of the following conditions may require the engine oil and oil filter to be replaced more frequently than under normal driving conditions:

• Repeated short-distance driving in cold outside temperatures, particularly when the engine has limited time to reach its normal operating temperature
• Frequent driving on dusty roads or in other conditions where airborne dirt is present
• Extended periods of engine idling
• Towing a trailer
• Regular stop-and-go commuting with frequent acceleration, braking, and idling

Air conditioner system refrigerant and oil recommendations

The air conditioning system in your NISSAN vehicle must be charged only with HFO-1234yf (R-1234yf) refrigerant and NISSAN A/C System Oil Type VC100YF (PAG), or products confirmed to be their exact equivalents.

CAUTION Using any refrigerant or air conditioning system oil other than the specified types will cause severe system damage and may require replacement of all air conditioner system components.

The HFO-1234yf (R-1234yf) refrigerant used in the Nissan Murano does not harm the earth's ozone layer. Although this refrigerant does not damage the ozone layer, government regulations require refrigerant to be properly recovered and recycled during automotive air conditioning service. The system should be serviced only by trained and certified technicians who can perform the work safely and correctly in accordance with SAE J2845. A NISSAN dealer has the specialized equipment and trained personnel required to recover and recycle the refrigerant. Only new evaporators certified to SAE J2842 may be installed as replacement components.

A damaged or leaking air conditioning evaporator must never be repaired or replaced with an evaporator removed from a used or salvaged vehicle. Replacement must be performed using only a new evaporator certified to SAE J2842. It is recommended that air conditioning system inspection, refrigerant recovery, and component replacement be performed by a NISSAN dealer.
