Basic Information

This SRS section provides important safety information about the Supplemental Restraint System used in the Nissan Murano. It explains the supplemental air bag and seat belt pretensioner systems that are designed to work with properly worn seat belts and correct occupant seating positions.

• Driver and front passenger supplemental front-impact air bag, also referred to as the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System.
• Front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag, designed for certain side-impact collision conditions.
• Rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag, provided for rear outboard passenger protection in certain side impacts.
• Front central seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag, if so equipped.
• Roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bag, designed for certain side-impact and rollover conditions.
• Driver and front passenger supplemental knee air bags.
• Seat belt with pretensioner(s) for the front and rear outboard seats.

Supplemental front-impact air bag system

The NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System can help cushion impact force to the head and chest areas of the driver and front passenger in certain frontal collisions. This system is supplemental, meaning it is intended to add protection in specific situations while the seat belt remains the primary restraint.

Front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag system

This system can help cushion impact force to the chest area of the driver and front passenger in certain side-impact collisions. The air bag is built into the front seat area and is designed to respond only under conditions where deployment is required.

The side air bags are designed to inflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted, helping provide additional protection on the struck side of the Nissan Murano.

Rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag system

This system can help cushion impact force to the chest area of rear outboard seat passengers in certain side-impact collisions. The rear outboard side air bags are designed to inflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted, adding supplemental protection for occupants seated near the side of the vehicle.

Front central seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag (if so equipped)

This system can help cushion impact force to the head area of the driver and front passenger in certain side-impact and rollover collisions. In a side-impact event, this air bag is designed to inflate during a vehicle impact from either side, depending on the collision conditions detected by the system.

Roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bag system

This system can help cushion impact force to the head of occupants in the front and rear outboard seating positions during certain side-impact collisions. The curtain air bags are designed to inflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted. In a rollover, the curtain air bags are designed to inflate and remain inflated for a short time to help provide additional head protection.

Driver and front passenger supplemental knee air bags

This system can help cushion impact force to the driver's and front passenger's knees in certain collisions. The knee air bags are part of the overall supplemental restraint design and are intended to work together with the seat belts and other air bag components.

The SRS in the Nissan Murano is designed to supplement the crash protection provided by the driver, front passenger, and rear outboard seat belts. It is not a substitute for seat belts. Seat belts should always be worn correctly, and each occupant should sit upright at a suitable distance from the steering wheel, instrument panel, door finishers, and other interior surfaces.

The supplemental air bags operate only when the ignition switch is placed in the ON position.

After placing the ignition switch in the ON position, the supplemental air bag warning light illuminates. The supplemental air bag warning light will turn off after about 7 seconds if the system is operational.

WARNING

• The front air bags ordinarily will not inflate during a side impact, rear impact, rollover, or lower-severity frontal collision. Always wear your seat belt correctly to help reduce the risk or severity of injury in different types of accidents, including situations where the front air bags are not designed to deploy.
• The front passenger air bag and front passenger supplemental knee air bag will not inflate if the passenger air bag status light is lit. Always pay attention to this status light before driving, especially when the front passenger seat is occupied.
• The seat belts and front air bags are most effective when you are sitting well back and upright in the seat.

  The front air bags inflate with great force. Even with the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System, an occupant who is unrestrained, leaning forward, sitting sideways, or sitting out of position in any way has a greater risk of serious injury or death in a crash. Serious or fatal injuries can also occur if an occupant is too close to the front air bag when it inflates. Always sit back against the seatback, keep as much practical distance as possible from the steering wheel or instrument panel, and always use the seat belts properly in the Nissan Murano.

• The driver and front passenger seat belt buckles are equipped with sensors that detect whether the seat belts are fastened. The NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System monitors collision severity and seat belt use, then deploys the air bags as needed. Failure to wear the seat belt correctly can increase the risk or severity of injury in an accident.
• The front passenger seat is equipped with an occupant classification sensor, also called a weight sensor, that can turn the front passenger air bag and front passenger supplemental knee air bag OFF under certain conditions.

  This sensor is used only in the front passenger seat.

  Failure to sit correctly and wear the seat belt properly can increase the risk or severity of injury in an accident. The occupant should remain upright, centered on the seat cushion, and properly restrained so the system can evaluate the seating condition as intended.

• Keep your hands on the outside of the steering wheel. Placing your hands inside the steering wheel rim could increase the risk of hand or arm injury if the front air bag inflates.

WARNING

• Never allow children to ride unrestrained or to extend their hands, arms, head, or face out of a window. Do not attempt to hold a child in your lap or arms while the vehicle is moving. In a sudden stop or collision, the forces can be too great for an adult to hold a child securely. The illustrations show examples of dangerous riding positions that must be avoided.

WARNING

• Children may be severely injured or killed if the front air bags, side air bags, or curtain air bags inflate while they are not properly restrained. Pre-teens and children should be properly secured in the rear seat whenever possible, using the appropriate child restraint, booster seat, or seat belt arrangement for their size and age. In the Nissan Murano, correct rear-seat restraint use is an important part of child passenger safety.

WARNING

• Even with the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System, never install a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat of the Nissan Murano.

  An inflating front air bag can deploy with extreme force and could seriously injure or kill a child positioned too close to the air bag. A rear-facing child restraint must be placed only where it is permitted and where the child can be properly secured according to the restraint manufacturer’s instructions and the vehicle safety guidance.

WARNING Front, front central and rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bags:

• The side air bags and curtain air bags ordinarily will not inflate in the event of a frontal impact, rear impact, or lower severity side collision. Their operation depends on the type, angle and severity of the collision, so seat belts must always be worn correctly to help reduce the risk or severity of injury in many different accident situations. In the Nissan Murano, the supplemental restraint system is designed to support proper occupant protection, not replace careful seating posture or correct seat belt use.

WARNING

• The seat belts, the side air bags and curtain air bags are most effective when every occupant is sitting well back and upright in the seat with both feet on the floor. The side air bag and curtain air bag inflate with great force. Do not allow anyone to place a hand, leg or face near the side air bag on the side of the seatback of the front or rear seat, and do not allow occupants to rest against the side roof rails where the curtain air bags deploy.

  Do not allow anyone sitting in the front seats or rear outboard seats to extend a hand, arm, head or any part of the body out of the window, lean against the door, or ride in a position that places the body too close to the air bag deployment area. Such positions can greatly increase the chance of injury if the supplemental restraint system activates. Some examples of dangerous riding positions are shown in the previous illustrations, and these warnings should be followed every time the Nissan Murano is driven.

WARNING

• When sitting in the rear seat, do not hold onto the seatback of the front seat. If the side air bag inflates, the force of deployment may cause serious injury to a passenger whose hands, arms, head or upper body are positioned too close to the air bag area. Be especially careful with children, who should always be properly restrained in an appropriate child restraint system or seat belt position for their size and age.

  Some examples of dangerous riding positions are shown in the illustrations. Rear passengers should remain seated normally, keep clear of the front seatback sides, and avoid leaning toward the door or roof rail area while the vehicle is moving.

• Do not use seat covers on the front or rear seatbacks of the Nissan Murano. Seat covers, padding or accessories that are not designed for the vehicle may interfere with side air bag inflation and can prevent the supplemental restraint system from operating as intended during a side-impact event.
