Brake warning light

Basic Information

Nissan Murano red brake warning light symbol in the instrument clusterOR Alternative red brake warning light symbol for the parking brake and foot brake systems

This light functions for both the parking brake and the foot brake systems. When it appears, it should be treated as an important brake-related warning rather than a routine indicator, because it may relate to the parking brake condition, brake fluid level, or the brake warning system.

Low brake fluid warning light

When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the light warns of a low brake fluid level. If the light comes on while the engine is running and the parking brake is not applied, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so and perform the following checks before continuing to drive:

1. Check the brake fluid level. Add brake fluid as necessary, using the correct procedure described for the brake system in this manual.

2. If the brake fluid level is correct, have the warning system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service so the brake warning circuit and related components can be inspected properly.

WARNING

  • Your brake system may not be working properly if the warning light is on.

Driving could be dangerous because braking performance may be reduced or the system may require more effort than normal. If you judge it to be safe, drive carefully and at reduced speed to the nearest service station for repairs.

Otherwise, have your Nissan Murano towed because continuing to drive with a brake warning condition could be dangerous.

  • Pressing the brake pedal with the engine stopped and/or with a low brake fluid level may increase your stopping distance. Braking may require greater pedal effort and more pedal travel, which can make it harder to stop the vehicle as quickly as expected.

  • If the brake fluid level is below the MINIMUM or MIN mark on the brake fluid reservoir, do not drive until the brake system has been checked.

It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service, because proper brake operation is essential for safe vehicle control.

Charge warning light

Charge warning light symbol indicating a possible charging system problem

If this light comes on while the engine is running, it may indicate that the charging system is not functioning properly. Turn the engine off and check the drive belt when it is safe to do so. If the belt is loose, broken, missing, or if the light remains on after checking the visible condition, have your vehicle serviced immediately.

It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service, because a charging system problem can affect electrical operation and may eventually prevent the vehicle from operating normally.

CAUTION Do not continue driving if the drive belt is loose, broken or missing. Continuing to operate the Nissan Murano under these conditions may lead to further vehicle damage or loss of essential system operation.

Electric power steering warning light (red)

Red electric power steering warning light symbol in the instrument panel

WARNING

  • If the engine is not running or is turned off while driving, the power assist for the steering will not work.

Steering will be harder to operate, especially at low speeds, during parking maneuvers, or when turning the steering wheel sharply.

  • When the electric power steering warning light illuminates in red with the engine running, there will be no power assist for the steering. You will still have control of the vehicle, but the steering will be harder to operate and will require more physical effort from the driver.

Have the power steering system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service so the electric power steering system can be diagnosed and repaired as needed.

When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the electric power steering warning light illuminates. After starting the engine, the electric power steering warning light turns off. This indicates that the power steering system is operational. If the red warning light remains on, comes on while driving, or appears together with unusually heavy steering effort, the Nissan Murano should be handled carefully and inspected as soon as possible.

When the electric power steering warning light illuminates in red, the electric power steering system does not operate. Stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and avoid continuing to drive unless it can be done without increasing risk. Have the power steering system checked as soon as possible. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service so the system can be inspected using the proper diagnostic procedure.

Electric shift control system warning light

Nissan Murano electric shift control system warning light symbol

This light illuminates when a malfunction occurs in the electric shift control system. If this warning appears, the shift control system may not be operating normally and the driver should pay close attention to the messages shown in the vehicle information display.

When the master warning light illuminates, the chime sounds and the following message is displayed in the vehicle information display: "When parked apply parking brake". This message is intended to remind the driver to secure the vehicle properly when it is parked.

When the ignition is placed in the OFF position, the chime sounds continuously. Ensure the parking brake is applied. Have the system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service, because the electric shift control system should be diagnosed and repaired according to the correct service procedure.

Electronic parking brake indicator light

Electronic parking brake indicator light symbolOR Alternative electronic parking brake indicator light symbol

This light illuminates when the electronic parking brake system is operating. It gives the driver a clear indication that the parking brake function is active.

When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the electronic parking brake indicator light illuminates. When the engine is started and the parking brake is released, the indicator light turns off. This normal sequence helps confirm that the indicator is functioning and that the parking brake has been released.

If the parking brake is not released, the electronic parking brake indicator light remains illuminated. Ensure the electronic parking brake indicator light has turned off before driving, because driving with the parking brake applied can affect vehicle movement and may cause unnecessary wear or system stress.

If the electronic parking brake indicator light illuminates or flashes while the electronic parking brake warning light Yellow electronic parking brake warning light symbol (yellow) illuminates, it may indicate that the electronic parking brake system is not functioning properly. Have the system checked. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service so the parking brake system in the Nissan Murano can be inspected before normal operation is resumed.

Engine oil pressure warning light

Engine oil pressure warning light symbol in the instrument cluster

This light warns of low engine oil pressure. If the light flickers or comes on during normal driving, pull off the road in a safe area, stop the engine immediately and call a NISSAN dealer or other authorized repair shop. Continuing to operate the engine with this warning active can quickly lead to serious engine damage.

The engine oil pressure warning light is not designed to indicate a low oil level. It warns about oil pressure, which is a separate condition from the amount of oil measured in the engine.

Use the dipstick to check the oil level. If the oil level is low, follow the appropriate procedure in this manual and do not rely on the warning light as a substitute for checking the dipstick.

CAUTION Running the engine with the engine oil pressure warning light on could cause serious damage to the engine almost immediately. Such damage is not covered by the NISSAN New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Turn off the engine as soon as it is safe to do so. In the Nissan Murano, this warning should be treated as an urgent engine protection alert.

Master warning light

Master warning light symbol for vehicle information display alerts

When the ignition is in the ON position, the master warning light illuminates if a warning message appears in the vehicle information display. This light is used to draw attention to messages that may require driver action, inspection, or a change in vehicle operation.

Seat belt warning light and chime

Nissan Murano seat belt warning light symbol with audible reminder

  • The light and chime remind you to fasten the seat belts. Always make sure the driver and passengers are properly buckled before the vehicle is driven, because correctly worn seat belts are essential for occupant protection.

  • The seat belt warning light will illuminate when the ignition switch is pushed to the ON position if the driver's seat belt is not fastened, or if the front passenger seat belt is not fastened when the front passenger seat is occupied. This reminder helps alert occupants before driving begins, so the seat belts can be secured correctly before the Nissan Murano is put into motion.

  • The seat belt warning light will also illuminate if a rear passenger seat belt is changed from fastened to unfastened. If this occurs while the vehicle is being driven, the warning is intended to remind the rear passenger to refasten the seat belt promptly.

  • If the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition switch is pushed to the ON position, the chime will sound shortly. The audible reminder works together with the warning light to draw the driver's attention to the unfastened belt condition.

  • If the vehicle is driven above a certain speed under conditions that illuminate the seat belt warning light, the lamp will begin to blink and the chime will sound for over one minute, or until the seat belt is fastened again. The driver and passengers should remain properly buckled whenever the vehicle is moving.

NOTE:

  • The warning light and/or chime may activate if an object is placed in the unoccupied front passenger seat. In this case, remove the object from the front passenger seat so the system does not interpret the added weight as an occupied seating condition.

  • The warning light and/or chime may activate if any seat belt is unfastened before the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Please remain fastened until the Nissan Murano has come to a complete stop, because seat belts are most effective when worn for the entire trip.

Steering Assist Hands Off warning light

Steering Assist Hands Off warning light symbol in the Nissan Murano instrument cluster

When Steering Assist is activated, it monitors the driver's steering wheel operation. The system is intended to support driving assistance, but the driver must remain attentive and ready to steer at all times.

If the steering wheel is not operated or the driver takes his/her hands off the steering wheel for a period of time, the warning light illuminates. If the driver does not operate the steering wheel after the warning light has been illuminated, an audible alert sounds and the warning flashes in the vehicle information display, followed by a quick brake application to request that the driver take control of the vehicle again. If the driver remains unresponsive, the vehicle will automatically turn on the hazard lights and slow to a complete stop. This sequence is designed to draw the driver's attention back to vehicle control when Steering Assist detects a lack of steering input.

Supplemental air bag warning light

Supplemental air bag warning light symbol for SRS and pretensioner system status

When the ignition switch is placed in the ON position, the supplemental air bag warning light illuminates for about 7 seconds and then turns off. This means the system is operational and has completed its initial self-check. In the Nissan Murano, this brief illumination is a normal part of the Supplemental Restraint System check when the vehicle is started.

If any of the following conditions occur, the front air bag, side air bag, curtain air bag, and pretensioner seat belt systems need servicing:

  • The supplemental air bag warning light remains on after approximately 7 seconds instead of turning off after the normal system check.
  • The supplemental air bag warning light flashes intermittently, which may indicate that the system has detected an irregular condition.
  • The supplemental air bag warning light does not come on at all when the ignition switch is placed in the ON position.

It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for these services so the restraint system can be inspected with the correct diagnostic equipment and repair procedure.

Unless checked and repaired, the supplemental restraint system, including the air bag system, and/or the pretensioners may not function properly. A warning light condition should not be ignored, because these systems are designed to support occupant protection during certain collisions.

WARNING If the supplemental air bag warning light is on, it could mean that the front air bag, side air bag, curtain air bag systems and/or pretensioner systems will not operate in an accident. To help avoid injury or death to yourself or others, have your vehicle checked as soon as possible. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
