Basic information

WARNING Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of vehicle damage, serious personal injury, or death while recovering a stuck vehicle:

• Contact a professional towing service whenever you are uncertain about the correct recovery method or attachment point.
• Attach towing chains, cables, or recovery equipment only to the main structural members intended to withstand recovery forces.
• Do not use the vehicle tie-down points to tow or pull the Nissan Murano free. These points are not designed for vehicle recovery loads.
• Use only equipment specifically designed for vehicle recovery and follow all instructions supplied by the equipment manufacturer.
• Pull the recovery device straight forward from the front of the vehicle. Never apply the pulling force at an angle, as an angled load may damage the vehicle or cause the recovery equipment to shift unexpectedly.
• Route the recovery strap, cable, or chain so it does not contact the bumper, body panels, suspension, or any other part of the vehicle apart from the correct attachment point.

If the vehicle becomes stuck in sand, snow, mud, or similar conditions, use a tow strap or another device manufactured specifically for vehicle recovery. Install and operate the equipment exactly as directed by its manufacturer.

Rocking a stuck vehicle

WARNING

• Make sure all people remain well clear of the stuck vehicle before attempting to move it.
• Do not spin the tires at high speed. Excessive wheel speed may cause a tire to rupture and result in serious injury. It may also cause vehicle components to overheat or become damaged.

If your Nissan Murano is stuck in sand, snow, mud, or another loose surface, use the following procedure:

1. Turn off the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system.

2. Check the areas directly in front of and behind the vehicle, and make sure they are free of people, objects, and other obstructions.

3. Turn the steering wheel from right to left to help clear space around the front tires and reduce resistance to vehicle movement.

4. Rock the vehicle slowly and carefully in the forward and reverse directions.

• Shift alternately between R (Reverse) and D (Drive) to create a controlled rocking motion.
• Press the accelerator only as much as necessary to maintain the movement. Excessive acceleration may cause the tires to spin without improving traction.
• Release the accelerator pedal before shifting between R (Reverse) and D (Drive).
• Do not allow the tires to spin at a speed greater than 35 mph (55 km/h).

5. If the vehicle remains stuck after several careful attempts, stop the recovery effort and contact a professional towing service to remove the vehicle safely.
