Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

When the automatic transmission fluid requires inspection, replacement, or other service, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer. Correct fluid selection and proper servicing are essential for maintaining smooth transmission operation and preventing internal damage.

CAUTION

  • NISSAN recommends using only Genuine NISSAN Matic R ATF in the Nissan Murano automatic transmission. Do not mix this fluid with any other transmission fluid, as an incompatible mixture may affect lubrication and transmission performance.
  • Do not use Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) fluid or manual transmission fluid in this automatic transmission. These fluids are not designed for the required application and may cause transmission damage. Damage resulting from the use of fluid other than the recommended type is not covered by the NISSAN New Vehicle Limited Warranty described in the Warranty Information Booklet.
  • Fluids that are not equivalent to Genuine NISSAN Matic R ATF may also damage the transmission or affect its operation. Any damage caused by using a fluid that does not meet the specified requirements is not covered by the NISSAN New Vehicle Limited Warranty outlined in the Warranty Information Booklet.

The required automatic transmission fluid specification is also identified on caution labels located within the engine compartment. Check these labels before adding or replacing fluid to confirm that the correct product is used for the Nissan Murano.

Brake fluid

WARNING

  • Use only new brake fluid taken from a sealed container. Old, poor-quality, or contaminated fluid may damage internal brake system components. Using an incorrect fluid can reduce braking performance and affect the vehicle's ability to stop safely.
  • Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir filler cap before removing it. This helps prevent dirt or other contaminants from entering the reservoir.
  • Brake fluid is poisonous. Store it only in clearly marked, properly closed containers and keep it out of the reach of children.

CAUTION Do not allow brake fluid to spill onto painted surfaces, because it can damage the paint finish.

If brake fluid is spilled, rinse the affected surface immediately with plenty of clean water.

Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir regularly. If the level is below the MIN line B, the brake warning light will illuminate. Add the correct brake fluid carefully until the level reaches the MAX line A, without overfilling the reservoir.

If brake fluid must be added frequently, the brake system may require inspection. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer to have the Nissan Murano brake system checked thoroughly and the cause of the fluid loss identified.

Windshield-washer fluid

Check and refill the windshield-washer fluid reservoir periodically. Add washer fluid whenever the "Low Washer Fluid" warning message appears in the vehicle information display or when washer performance indicates that the fluid level is low.

To refill the reservoir, lift the cap from the windshield-washer fluid reservoir and pour the correct washer fluid carefully into the filler opening. Reinstall the cap securely after filling.

Use a suitable washer solvent to improve windshield cleaning performance. During winter, add windshield-washer antifreeze as required for the operating temperature. Follow the product manufacturer's instructions carefully when preparing the correct mixture.

Refill the reservoir more frequently when weather, road spray, dust, mud, or other driving conditions require repeated use of the windshield washers.

The recommended product is Genuine NISSAN Windshield Washer Concentrate Cleaner & Antifreeze or an equivalent washer fluid that meets the same intended use.

CAUTION

  • Do not use engine antifreeze or engine coolant as a substitute for windshield-washer fluid. Engine coolant may damage the Nissan Murano paint finish if it contacts exterior surfaces.
  • Do not fill the windshield-washer reservoir with concentrated washer fluid at full strength unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically require it. Certain methyl alcohol-based concentrates may permanently stain the grille if spilled during filling.
  • Mix concentrated washer fluid with water to the ratio specified by the manufacturer before adding it to the reservoir. Do not use the windshield-washer fluid reservoir itself to combine or dilute the concentrate and water.
